Human Hair Wig Care in 5 Steps

Detangle. Wet. Shampoo. Condition. Dry.

BEFORE WASH DAY

Set Up a Calm, Simple Routine

A well-planned wash makes it easier to care for both the hair and the delicate base of your wig. Work gently, give each stage enough time and keep the lengths organized throughout. This DK HAIR guide takes you through a simple five-step routine, followed by care between washes.

The routine is intended for removable human hair wigs. Start with the instructions supplied for your own texture and cap construction. For a glued or sewn-in installation, ask your stylist about removal and cleaning around the attachment areas.

Before you begin

Prepare a clean basin, lukewarm water, a wide-tooth comb, shampoo, conditioner, a soft absorbent towel and a suitable wig stand. Choose a time when you can complete the wash and allow the cap to dry fully.

STEP 01

Release the Tangles

Remove light tangles before introducing water. For straight or loosely waved hair, separate a small section and start with the tips. Hold the section above the area you are combing so the pulling force does not reach the lace.

  • Ease apart loose tangles with your fingers, then make short downward passes with the comb.
  • When the tips are clear, start a little higher and comb through the length already released.
  • For defined curls, use the detangling method and moisture level recommended for that texture. Avoid forcing the hair straight or repeatedly brushing out dry curls.

Support the section above the tangle and begin at the tips. Move the starting point higher only after the lower lengths are free.

Move up in stages; comb down toward the ends.
Do not begin at the cap and drag the comb through a tight knot. If a section will not release gently, pause and check our tangling and shedding guide.

STEP 02

Wet the Hair Gently

Fill a clean basin with lukewarm water. Support the wig from inside the cap and gently lower the hair into the water so it becomes evenly wet. Keep the lengths loosely extended, with enough room to avoid bunching them together.

Use this stage to wet the hair, without stirring, rubbing or leaving the wig for a prolonged soak. Lift it carefully with the cap supported before moving to shampooing. If your wig’s care instructions specify running water instead of basin wetting, follow that method.

Wet the hair gently while keeping the cap supported and the lengths loosely aligned. Avoid stirring or bunching the wig in the water.

STEP 03

Cleanse with Shampoo

Apply a small amount of shampoo according to its directions. With the cap supported and the lengths hanging down, distribute the lather using gentle strokes in the direction of the hair. Keep your touch light around lace and knots.

  • Clean without twisting the lengths, scratching the base or rubbing the hair into a ball.
  • Give the inside bands and other skin-contact areas careful attention, following the instructions for that cap.
  • Rinse with clean lukewarm water, allowing it to travel down toward the ends. Continue until the shampoo is removed, including residue in folds of the cap.

Use light downward movements to distribute shampoo. Keep the hair hanging in one direction instead of rubbing it into a ball.

If adhesive remains on the lace, use the removal method specified for that attachment. Do not try to scrape it away during washing.

STEP 04

Condition the Lengths

After rinsing out the shampoo, gently distribute conditioner through the mid-lengths and ends. Keep it clear of the cap, lace and tied knots. Give extra attention to the lower lengths while avoiding a thick coating of product.

Follow the conditioner’s stated contact time, then rinse thoroughly with cool to lukewarm water. Longer treatment time or added heat is not automatically better. Do not leave a rinse-out conditioner in the wig as a styling product.

Keep conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends, away from the lace and tied knots. The mannequin demonstrates placement; use drying support suited to the cap.

STEP 05

Blot and Dry with Care

Support the wet wig, let excess water drain, then lay it on a clean towel with the lengths loosely arranged. Fold the towel over the hair and press gently to absorb moisture. Keep both hands relaxed rather than twisting or wringing the hair.

Place the wig on a suitable ventilated stand, allowing the cap to rest at its natural size. Leave space around the base and below the ends. Allow it to air-dry if that is the method specified for your wig; a delicate hairpiece may need different support.

First blot with a towel; then support the wig on a ventilated stand without stretching the cap. Leave space below the ends and dry the base fully.

Check the cap, not just the ends.
The inside can stay damp after the surface hair feels dry. Let the base dry fully before storage or wear. Keep the wig away from radiators and strong direct sunlight.

Some styles need a controlled blow-dry for their intended finish; follow your wig’s care guidance. Curling irons and flat irons should touch only fully dry hair, at a suitable low setting, and should stay clear of the lace and cap.

BETWEEN WASHES

Keep Daily Care Light and Consistent

After each wear

  • Check the nape and ends for small tangles, then release them gently before they tighten.
  • Adjust the wig using its cap or straps, keeping unnecessary pulling away from the lace edge.
  • Avoid repeated heat styling when the shape can be restored with gentle arranging.
  • Remove a removable wig before sleeping. For longer-wear installations, follow your stylist’s maintenance plan.

During a weekly check

  • Look over the cap, seams and straps, and note any area that needs attention.
  • Assess sweat, odor and visible residue to decide whether a wash is needed.
  • Review how the lengths feel after your usual wash and conditioning routine before adding extra treatments.
  • Keep a short note of washing, heat styling and color services so changes are easier to track.

A weekly check does not mean every wig needs washing or a deep treatment every week. Set the schedule by wear, buildup and the instructions for your product. For cap fit and wearing questions, visit our Human Hair Wig FAQ.

STORAGE & SUPPORT

Finish the Routine with Careful Storage

Store the wig only after both hair and cap are fully dry. Arrange it loosely on a suitable stand between wears, or in a clean storage bag or box for travel. Protect the lace from sharp folds and give curls room to keep their shape.

If you notice sudden severe matting, persistent heavy shedding, a growing thin patch or damaged lace, stop experimenting with stronger treatments. Photograph the issue and keep your order details and care history available.
