Wig Density Guide

Understanding 150%, 180%, 200% and 250%

START HERE

Choosing a wig involves more than selecting a length and texture. The amount of hair also affects the finished look and how the wig feels to wear.

But what do 150%, 180%, 200% and 250% density mean? How much does each option weigh? And can you request a combination that differs from the usual choices?

At DK HAIR, we can explain these options through the materials used to make our wigs. This guide covers our standard bundle-and-lace-piece configurations, estimated weights for 5×5 lace closure wigs, and how to request custom fullness.

The configuration and weight tables below apply to the specific DK HAIR assembly method described here. Some factory-produced styles, including certain colored wigs and bobs, use different specifications.

01 / UNDERSTAND DENSITY

What Does Wig Density Mean?

Wig density describes how much hair is used in a wig and is commonly expressed as a percentage. Within a particular product range, a higher option generally indicates more hair.

A density percentage does not tell you the wig's weight in grams. A 180% wig does not automatically weigh 180g.

It also helps to separate three ideas:

  • Density: the amount of hair used in the wig.
  • Strand thickness: how fine or coarse each individual hair is.
  • Finished weight: the combined weight of the hair, lace, cap and attached accessories.

Hair quality, processing history and the fullness of the ends also deserve attention. The density label alone does not establish any of these.

02 / FIND YOUR FULLNESS

Choosing Between 150%, 180%, 200% and 250%

Start with the amount of fullness you enjoy wearing. The following descriptions are a starting point for choosing among the DK HAIR configurations in this guide.

Density Fullness preference What to consider
150% A lighter amount of hair within this range Consider this option if you prefer less overall bulk.
180% A balance between everyday fullness and weight A useful starting point when you want more hair than the 150% configuration.
200% A fuller overall look Consider this option when extra hair is part of your preferred style.
250% The fullest standard configuration shown here Consider whether the additional weight suits your wearing preferences.

These options are not quality grades. Choose the fullness that works with your preferred length, texture and hairstyle.

For a like-for-like comparison, keep the wig length and lace specification the same. Comparing a short straight wig with a long curly wig will not isolate the effect of density.

03 / OUR CONFIGURATIONS

How DK HAIR Builds These Density Options

For the configurations below, we assemble the wig using wefted hair bundles and a lace closure or frontal. Each full bundle is calculated at 100g; half a bundle contributes 50g.

Bundle quantity by length and density

Wig length 150% 180% 200% 250%
12–14 inches 1 bundle / 100g 1.5 bundles / 150g 2 bundles / 200g 2.5 bundles / 250g
16–22 inches 1.5 bundles / 150g 2 bundles / 200g 2.5 bundles / 250g 3 bundles / 300g
24–30 inches 2 bundles / 200g 2.5 bundles / 250g 3 bundles / 300g 3.5 bundles / 350g

This table shows bundle input only. The lace piece and other cap components are added separately. Length groups refer to the two-inch options listed in the weight chart below.

In this configuration system, moving from 150% to 180%, from 180% to 200%, or from 200% to 250% adds 50g of bundle input. The percentages identify our options; they are not a formula for multiplying a wig's weight.

Why the bundle lengths and lace-piece length may differ

For example, our standard 24-inch, 180% configuration uses:

  • 1.5 bundles of 22-inch hair: 150g.
  • 1 bundle of 24-inch hair: 100g.
  • One 20-inch lace closure or frontal, in the selected lace size.

That means 250g of bundle input before adding the lace piece. The 24-inch wig label does not mean that all its bundles and the lace piece contain 24-inch hair.

Which wigs use these tables?

The wigs in our Lace Closure Wigs collection and Lace Frontal Wigs collection are made using the bundle-and-lace-piece method described in this guide. Browse these collections to choose a style and discuss your preferred density with us.

The bundle configurations above cover these assembled wigs. The finished-weight chart below is specifically for 5×5 lace closure wigs; other lace sizes require their own lace-piece weights.

Some styles produced in factory batches, including certain colored wigs and bobs, use other material allocations or construction methods. Check the individual product specification for those styles. A custom combination also requires its own calculation.

04 / 5×5 WEIGHT REFERENCE

DK HAIR Wig Weight Reference

The following chart estimates finished weight using:

Bundle input + reference weight of the lace piece + approximately 10g of cap materials and accessories − approximately 5–10g of trimming loss.

The additional cap materials and accessories include items such as the cap base, elastic band and combs or clips. The lace-piece reference weight is added separately and includes that component as supplied.

These are estimates of finished-unit weight, rather than hair-only net weight.

How to read the ranges: the figures use the reference lace-piece weights and allow for the stated trimming loss. They do not include the lace piece's own approximately 3–5g variation. Accessory weight and trimming can also vary, so an actual wig may fall outside a displayed range. These are planning references, not strict acceptance limits or scale measurements.

05 / MADE TO YOUR REQUEST

Custom Fullness: Choose Your Own Bundle Combination

You can also request a wig made with your preferred bundle quantity and lace piece.

For example, a custom request could specify five 30-inch bundles plus one 26-inch lace closure or frontal. At 100g per bundle, the bundle input alone would be 500g.

We would calculate the complete configuration using the selected lace piece and production details. A 26-inch lace piece is outside the lace-piece lengths used in the standard chart above, so its weight must be confirmed separately.

For this type of order, pricing is based on:

The price of the selected bundles + the price of the selected closure or frontal + the wig-making fee.

Describing the actual materials gives us a clear basis for the quotation. You do not need to assign the combination a density percentage before contacting us.

Include your preferred bundle lengths and quantities, lace-piece length and size, texture, color and cap size when discussing a custom order.

06 / COMPARE THE DETAILS

Comparing Density Labels and Prices Between Sellers

There is no universally applied density-to-weight standard for wigs. Manufacturers use their own specifications to assign labels such as 150%, 180%, 200% and 250%, so the same percentage can represent different amounts of hair from different suppliers.

An example of a seller's published weight chart, with brand details obscured. The product description identifies this as a 5×5 wig with 200% density.

For example, the chart above lists the 24-inch option at 255g. Our standard 24-inch, 5×5 wig assembled at 180% density has an estimated finished weight of 306–311g, based on the configuration explained in this guide.

Seller's product shown above 200% 255g, as listed by the seller
DK HAIR's standard assembled configuration 180% Approximately 306–311g, calculated from our configuration

In this example, the seller's 200% product is listed at a lower weight than the estimate for our 180% configuration at the same stated length and lace size. A higher density label therefore does not automatically indicate a heavier wig.

These figures compare the seller's published specification with our assembly estimate. They are not a side-by-side weighing test; texture, cap construction and hair distribution may differ. Weight alone also does not establish hair quality.

Compare the complete product specifications before using price to decide which wig offers better value. Consider the hair quality and processing history, bundle quantities and lengths, lace and cap construction, and what the quoted weight includes. A higher percentage at a lower price does not, by itself, confirm that you are getting more hair or better value.

07 / QUICK ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Does 180% density mean a wig weighs 180g?

No. Density percentages and weight in grams describe different things. Check the specification for the particular wig length and construction.

Why do some lengths have the same estimated weight?

Each full bundle is calculated at 100g regardless of its length. Some of our configurations use the same bundle quantity and the same lace-piece length while changing the bundle lengths. Their estimated weights can therefore match.

Equal estimated weight does not mean that the hair lengths or finished appearance are identical.

How does the lace piece affect the finished weight?

Lace size, the area carrying hair and the attached hair length all affect the lace-piece weight, which contributes to the finished wig weight.

Does this weight chart apply to every DK HAIR wig?

No. It applies to the 5×5 bundle-and-lace-piece configurations explained in this guide. Other factory-produced styles and individually specified custom orders have their own material requirements.

Can I specify the number and length of bundles?

Yes. You can request a particular combination of bundles and a closure or frontal. We will base the quotation on the selected materials and wig-making fee.

Can I confirm the expected weight before ordering?

Ask us to confirm the configuration and estimated weight for your chosen specification. An estimate describes the planned build; an actual finished weight requires weighing the completed wig.
